Privacy Policy
Your data stays on your device. Rooted collects nothing, sells nothing, and shares nothing about you.
The short version
Rooted is a local-first app. Everything — your plants, photos, events, and notes — is stored only on your device. We have no servers, no accounts, and no way to access your data. We never collect, sell, or share your personal information.
What Rooted stores
All app data is stored locally on your device using a SQLite database and your device's file system. This includes:
- Plant names, varieties, notes, and settings you enter
- Photos you take or import into the app
- Event log entries and timeline notes
- App preferences (language, watering reminder settings)
None of this data is sent to any server operated by Rooted. It never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to export a backup.
What Rooted does not collect
Rooted collects zero analytics, telemetry, or usage data. We do not use crash reporters, advertising SDKs, or any third-party tracking libraries. There are no accounts, no sign-in, and no user profiles.
AI features and OpenAI
Rooted offers optional AI features powered by OpenAI. These features are entirely opt-in and require you to provide your own OpenAI API key.
When you use an AI feature (photo analysis, growing guide generation, plant identification), the relevant data — such as a plant photo or descriptive text — is sent directly from your device to OpenAI's API. Rooted does not proxy, store, or log this data.
- AI features are disabled by default until you add an API key
- You control when and whether AI is invoked
- Every AI result is shown for your review before anything is saved
- Your API key is stored securely in your device's secure storage

Backups
Rooted lets you export a backup file containing all your plant data and photos as a single zip archive. This file is shared via your device's standard share sheet — you decide where it goes (Files, email, cloud storage, etc.).
Rooted has no access to your backup files. You are responsible for the security of any backup files you create and store.
Watering reminders
Rooted can send local push notifications to remind you to water your plants. These notifications are scheduled locally on your device using the operating system's notification APIs. No data is sent to any server to deliver these reminders.
Children's privacy
Rooted does not knowingly collect any information from children. As the app collects no personal data at all, it is suitable for use by anyone.
Changes to this policy
If we update this privacy policy, the new version will be posted on this page with a revised effective date. Given Rooted's local-first design, material changes are unlikely — but we'll be transparent if they occur.
